3 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Run

Running may be one of the most popular sports, but we all feel demotivated at times to stretch our legs and get that dose of exercise we used to enjoy so much. If you’ve been lacking motivation lately and haven’t gone for a run in the longest time, this blog is just what you need to get back on track.

Schedule Your Runs

You schedule work-related meetings, doctor’s appointments, and other important events all the time. It’s time to treat your runs the same way.

We all get occupied with the dozens of things going on in our lives at times, letting go of the activities that bring us joy in the process. You may think you no longer have the time to go running, but trust us, there’s always time for things you love. Instead of treating them as hobbies or things you occasionally do, consider scheduling your daily activities around them.

For example, schedule a running appointment (with yourself) for tomorrow evening, even if you can only spare 20 minutes. All other tasks for the day will be worked around your running appointment. Mark it on your calendar, set up a reminder, and treat it exactly as you’d treat a “normal” appointment.

Treat Yo-Self!

You know that popular catchphrase from the American sitcom Parks and Recreation? It’s time to bring it to life. In other words, it’s time to “treat yo-self” as Tommy Haverford would say.

Treat yourself to a reward each time you go out for a run. This doesn’t have to be anything extravagant. It could be a celebratory snack or ten extra minutes of Netflix. The idea is to allow yourself to feel accomplished and view the run as a success. You can even set running goals and reward yourself when you meet them to boost motivation.

Opt for a Virtual Challenge

Another great way to feel motivated is by opting for a virtual racing challenge. You can even participate in a marathon challenge to really motivate yourself. Even better: take the challenge with a friend to make things more exciting and stay in good spirits before, during, and after the race.

Trust us; you’re going to experience running like never before!

The Running Bug provides a range of virtual marathon challenges. Check out our 5k and 10k run challenges here, and sign up for a virtual racing challenge today! We also offer kids’ challenges.
