A BRIEF HISTORY OF ST GEORGE’S DAY
Every year, St George’s Day is celebrated on 23 April, the feast day of St George, the patron saint of England.
But the real story of St George is very different from the traditional image of an English medieval knight.
St George is believed to have lived in the Roman Near East and was probably a soldier in the Roman army. He was a Christian who was martyred at around AD 303, centuries before the medieval tales of knights and dragons became associated with him.
Interestingly, St George is not believed to have ever visited England.
His reputation nevertheless spread across Europe, and his feast day was being celebrated in England from at least the 8th century. St George later became strongly associated with English kings, soldiers and national identity.
The familiar red Cross of St George on a white background eventually became England’s national flag.
🐉 What About St George and the Dragon?
It’s one of the world’s most famous legends:
St George versus the dragon.
According to the story, St George confronted and defeated a terrifying dragon, rescuing people who were threatened by it.
However, the dragon story appeared centuries after the historical George lived.
Images depicting George fighting a dragon date from hundreds of years after his death, while the tale became particularly famous during the Middle Ages through collections of saints’ stories including The Golden Legend.
Over time, the story came to represent themes including courage, bravery and the triumph of good over evil.
It is that legendary battle that inspired the centrepiece of our St George’s Day 10K medal.
